Probate
Probate is the court-supervised process of administering a deceased person’s estate. As a brief, general overview of the probate process in Washington, a petition is filed with the Superior Court having jurisdiction over the case; an executor or administrator is appointed; letters are issued; notice is published to creditors; estate assets are identified, located and valued; taxes, debts and valid creditor claims are paid; assets are distributed and the declaration is filed to close the estate. Unlike other states, probate in Washington is often straightforward and efficient due to the availability of non-intervention powers. When non-intervention powers are available, the administrator or executor can act with minimal court-supervision.
