Probate and Estate Administration

Probate is the legal process of settling a person’s estate after death. In Washington, probate involves validating a will, if there is one, appointing a personal representative or estate administrator, identifying and valuing assets, paying debts and taxes, and distributing property to heir or beneficiaries. If a person dies having executed a will, a court appoints a personal representative to administer the probate.  If a person dies without a will, the person is intestate, and a court appoints an administrator.

Unlike other states, probate in Washington is often straightforward, efficient and can be handled without court hearings.  In many cases, the personal representative can act independently without ongoing court supervision and serve without bond.

We guide personal representatives and estate administrators through each step of the process. We can help determine whether probate is necessary, prepare and file court documents, advise on creditor claims and asset distribution, and complete the process.

We recognize that grief and stress can accompany the passing of a loved one and our goal is to provide compassionate legal guidance.
